Minimally invasive care, image-guided precision.

Dr. Anish Ghodadra is a board-certified interventional radiologist at UPMC. He treats knee pain, liver tumors, blood clots, and more, through tiny punctures rather than open surgery.

What is GAE?
Color-coded blood flow map of a knee before embolization, showing a bright cluster of abnormal vessels feeding the inflamed joint lining Before
The same view after embolization, with the bright cluster of abnormal vessels gone After
Blood flow to the knee lining before and immediately after embolization. Warmer colors mean more blood flow.

Genicular Artery Embolization at UPMC

GAE is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure for chronic knee pain. Through a pinhole puncture in the foot or groin, the interventional radiologist navigates a microcatheter to the small arteries supplying the inflamed synovium of the knee, then releases tiny particles that block the abnormal vessels driving inflammation and pain.

Most patients begin to notice meaningful pain relief within a few weeks, with maximum benefit by three months. UPMC has highlighted Dr. Ghodadra's GAE work in patient stories, including using GAE to treat recurrent hemarthrosis after total knee arthroplasty.

“In interventional radiology, we treat everything from cancer patients to patients who have life-threatening blood clots. But the most number of times I have heard from patients, ‘Hey, Doc, you saved my life,’ has come from these patients [GAE patients]. Pain is truly life-altering. To be able to give the ability to move back to folks, it's been very exciting and humbling.” Dr. Anish Ghodadra, UPMC HealthBeat (2025)
